After an impressive upward streak, many market analysts and investors assumed that further gains for Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) would be modest. With most of its order book developments seemingly factored into the stock price, there was little expectation for major movement until the Union Budget 2024. However, RVNL’s stock price has defied these expectations, soaring by 46% in just the past five days. This surprising surge raises the question: what’s fueling this momentum, and what can investors expect next?
Key Factors Behind RVNL’s Stock Surge
Government’s Ambitious Rail Plans
The Indian Railways has unveiled an ambitious plan to manufacture 10,000 AC coaches over the next two years to enhance passenger comfort. Northern Railway has reported that the number of non-AC coaches will also rise by 22% during this period. For the fiscal year 2024-25, the plan includes the production of various types of coaches aimed at improving passenger facilities. This includes general, sleeper, and SLR coaches, among others, for the Amrit Bharat trains.
The following fiscal year, 2025-26, will see even more substantial production targets. This expansion in railway manufacturing not only augments project opportunities for RVNL but also promises to significantly boost the company’s revenue through increased infrastructure work.
Strategic Memorandums of Understanding
On July 10, 2024, RVNL announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IMS Consultancy. This partnership will provide RVNL with technical and advisory services for various infrastructure projects in Nepal, spanning sectors such as railways, tunnels, roads, bridges, airports, and power transmission. Similarly, on July 9, 2024, RVNL signed an MoU with TATWEER Middle East and Africa, focusing on rail-based projects and smart city initiatives in the MENA region and Europe.
Moreover, RVNL’s collaboration with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) involves participating in future projects both in India and internationally. These MoUs enhance RVNL’s project portfolio and technical capabilities, potentially leading to increased revenue and profitability.
Multiple Recent Order Wins
RVNL’s strong market position is further evidenced by its recent series of order wins. In the past month alone, the company has secured multiple contracts, including:
On July 9, 2024, RVNL secured a contract for the construction of six elevated metro stations in Maharashtra with an order value of Rs 1.9 billion, to be completed over a period of 30 months. On July 7, 2024, the company received an order from the South Eastern Railway for a 132 KV Traction Substation, valued at Rs 2.0 billion, with a completion time of 18 months.
Earlier, on July 2, 2024, RVNL won a contract for OHE modification work in the Wardha-Ballarshah Section, worth Rs 1.3 billion, to be executed over 24 months. On June 27, 2024, the company was awarded a project for EI-based Automatic Signaling in the Dhaulpur-Gwalior Section, with an order value of Rs 0.7 billion, to be completed in 455 days.
On June 26, 2024, RVNL received two orders: one for Automatic Signaling on the Ernakulam JN – Vallattol Nagar Section, valued at Rs 1.6 billion, with a duration of 750 days, and another for a 132 KV Traction Substation for the South Eastern Railway, valued at Rs 1.9 billion, to be completed in 18 months.
On June 14, 2024, the company secured an order for an Automatic Block Signaling system for the East Coast Railway, worth Rs 1.6 billion, to be completed over 24 months. On June 10, 2024, RVNL won two contracts: one for OHE modification work in the Amla-Nagpur Section, valued at Rs 1.4 billion, with a duration of 24 months, and another for Phase-2A & Phase 2B electrification for the Bangalore Metro, with a significant order value of Rs 39.4 billion, to be executed over 130 weeks.
These significant orders underscore RVNL’s growing influence and ability to secure high-value projects, bolstering its financial performance and investor confidence.
Future Prospects for RVNL
RVNL is not resting on its laurels. The company is actively expanding into metro line development for major cities and suburban networks. This geographical diversification, coupled with partnerships in the rolling stock manufacturing sector, positions RVNL favorably within the rail infrastructure ecosystem.
Moreover, RVNL’s recent designation as a Navratna company grants it greater autonomy in project execution and capital expenditure, allowing for more agile and strategic international ventures. As these substantial projects are executed, RVNL’s margins are expected to improve, further solidifying its leadership in India’s rail infrastructure sector.
Recent Share Performance
Over the past five days, RVNL’s stock price has surged by more than 46%. Year-to-date, the stock has increased by 238.4%. Over the last six months, it has climbed 212%, and it has risen approximately 403.9% over the past year.
